What is OxC-beta?

OxC-beta is the proprietary, patented active ingredient in Oximunol™ Chewable Tablets. It is a highly concentrated version of oxidized derivatives of carotenoids that are found naturally and extensively in the plant world in minute amounts.

OxC-beta possesses multiple immunomodulatory activities including:

*  Priming of the gut innate immune function by upregulation of surveillance receptors, and;

*  Helping to maintain a normal inflammatory response.

This means OxC-beta possesses a unique ability to both promote the body’s innate resistance to pathogens while at the same time limiting the potential for an unregulated and harmful inflammatory cascade to arise.

Effect of OxC-beta in dogs

Research in canine fibroblasts has shown that OxC-beta treatment helps to maintain a normal cytokine cascade resulting in a healthy balance between mechanisms involved in triggering inflammation and those involved in resolving inflammation.

Fibroblasts were pre-treated with OxC-beta for 24 hours. Following pre-treatment, cells were challenged by exposure to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for 4 hours. Chemokine expression was measured using quantitative real-time PCR with total RNA.

Results show that in the context of an LPS challenge OxC-beta has a significant suppressive effect on the level of MCP-1 (CCL2) and RANTES (CCL5) gene-expression. The suppressive effect of OxC-beta was evaluated relative to cells treated with LPS alone.

Oximunol™ Chewable Tablets palatability proven in trials

Studies with dogs indicate that Oximunol™ Chewable Tablets with palatability enhancer were accepted by a greater proportion of dogs (81%) compared to the positive control, Heartgard (71%).

Beneficial effects proven in a clinical study

A clinical trial, conducted by the Chemaphor Nutrisciences Research Group in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, found statistically significant (P<0.05) improvement of coat quality compared to untreated controls. In addition, treated dogs showed a tendency to increased enjoyment of walks.

The study consisted of a blinded, randomized clinical trial involving 46 dogs recruited from the public. The dogs were randomly assigned to receive either the Oximunol™ Chewable Tablets (0.5 mg/kg body weight) or a placebo once daily over a period of six months. Owners completed questionnaires at the start and end of the study regarding their dog’s level of anxiety, activity, enjoyment of physical activity and coat quality.

The results indicate OxC-beta was well tolerated and may have beneficial effects as a supplement for dogs, particularly with regard to improvement of coat quality and mobility. No adverse effects were reported.

Safety of OxC-beta supported by clinical study

A recent study examined the safety of the oxidized beta-carotene (OxC-beta) in dogs treated orally once daily for 28 days at 2, 7, and 11 times the intended dose. Results did not reveal any adverse effects based on physical examination, body weight measurement, food consumption, CBC, serum biochemistry, coagulation parameters, and urinalysis.

Continuing research on OxC-beta

OxC-beta has been researched and developed over the last ten years. The basic idea behind OxC-beta technology is that the bioactives of carotenoids result from one or more of their oxidation products, not from the carotenoid compound itself. Intensive research is ongoing in Canada to develop scientifically documented applications in both animals and humans.
